Current Context: The government of Meghalaya launched ‘Piggery Mission’ with an aim to reduce annual import of pork to Rs 150 crore and to make Meghalaya Aatma Nirbhar in pork production in the upcoming 3 years.
- The funds allotted for this scheme is Rs 209 crores.
- The Piggery Mission is launched under Meghalaya Livestock Enterprises Advancement Society (MLEADS).
- The financial support to this scheme is offered by National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).
- Under this scheme, the piggery sector will be totally transformed in terms of quality enhancement, skill development, value addition and input cost estimation.
- Under this mission, a regular income source will be provided to members of 300 PACCS (Primary Agriculture Cooperative Credit Societies). Interest-free loans will be offered to the state farmers.
- Piggery Mission is implemented under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
