Current Context: The Telecomm Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended to form an industry body for cloud service providers (CSP).
- This recommendation by TRAI is the part of ‘light-touch regulatory framework’.
- Therefore, the TRAI has given authority to Department of Telecom (DoT) to start with the process of setting up of the industry body in this regard and has asked cloud service providers to become its members. Thus, the first industry body will be set by DoT and it will be the non-profit body.
- Steps to set up the first industry body by DoT: (1) Enrollment of CSP operating in India (2) Formation of adhoc body to frame rules, organizational structures and election process (3) Election of office bearers to work as a regulator industry body.
- The industry body will work in coordination with TRAI and DoT.
- The industry body will allow the stakeholders to be in the right spot in the sequence.
- It will review its work and experience and will take further decision to form multiple industry bodies for various purposes so that it will be able to address multiple market segments.
- Initially, the CSP will be limited to providers who are offering infrastructure as a service and platform as service.
- The membership is not made compulsory for software as service provider. But if they wish , they can acquire for membership on a volunteer basis.
