Current Context: The Global Hunger Index of 2020 is released.

  • India has marked the rank position of 94th among 107 countries in this index. 
  • The indicators for the assessment of Global Hunger Index are: Undernourishment, Child Wasting, Child Stunting and Child Mortality.
  • As per the report, India comes under ‘serious category’ with a score of 27.2.
  • A score of India in each assessment category: For child stunting, rate is 37.4%. Wasting rate is 17.3% , undernourishment rate is 14% and under 5 mortality rate is 3.7%. 
  • Other neighboring countries of India which are under serious category are Bangladesh (75th) , Myanmar (78th) and Pakistan (88th).
  • Nepal (73rd) and Sri Lanka (64th) are in moderate category in Global Hunger index 2020.
