Current Context: Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel gave assent to an ordinance against forcible or "dishonest" religious conversions.
UP Governor gave assent to an Ordinance against Forcible Religious Conversion
  • Therefore in this regard, the state cabinet cleared the ‘Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020’. 
  • This ordinance aims to control and limit the forcible or "dishonest" religious conversions including those for the purpose of marriage.
  • This ordinance will prohibit conversion of religion through force, frauds, under influence or misrepresentation. 
  • As per the ordinance, the marriage will be declared as null if the moto of marriage was to change the religion of girls. 
  • The offenders on doing so will have to undergo a jail punishment of up to 10 years.
  • If a minor woman or person belonging to SC or ST are converted by unlawful measures, the punishment of jail for minimum 3 years along with the fine amount of Rs 25,000 is declared. 
  • As per the ordinance, individuals who wish to change religion after marriage will have to apply for same at district magistrate office.
