Current Context: The 4th NSA Level Meet on Trilateral Maritime Security Cooperation was held between India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

  • The meeting was hosted by Sri Lanka. 
  • The Indian side was represented by Ajit Doval, National Security Adviser. 
  • Whereas Sri Lanka was represented by Kamal Gunaratne, Defence Secretary and the Maldives was represented by Mariya Didi, Defence Minister. 
  • The dignitaries discussed enhancing maritime security cooperation in the Indian Ocean.
  • They also held a discussion about developing cooperation in fields like humanitarian assistance in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), defence relief, joint naval exercises, capacity building, marine pollution and underwater heritage.
  • All the three nations agreed to improve intelligence sharing to tackle issues like terrorism, money laundering, drug trafficking, human trafficking, the effect of climate change on the marine environment.
