GOI and AIIB to improve Assam Power Transmission Network

Current Context: The Indian Government and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have entered into an agreement to improve the power transmission network in Assam.

• They have signed a loan agreement of $304 million for the same.
• The loan agreement is signed for Assam Intra-State Transmission System Enhancement Project.
• The total cost of this project is $365 million. The AIIB will be providing $304 million and the remaining funds will be granted by the state government.
• The project will improve the power transmission network in a reliable and secured manner, in order to meet the power demand of the state.
• Under this project, 10 transmission substations will be constructed, transmission lines will be laid down to carry power safely.
• The project will also upgrade the existing substations and transmission lines. The existing ground wire will be upgraded to optical power ground wire.
• Thus the project will help to improve the reliability, capacity and security of the power transmission network of the state.
