Current Context: The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2021 was held recently.

  • India was represented by the Minister of State for Communication, Sanjay Dhotre.
  • The WSIS Forum is the world's largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for the development community.
  • It was organised by International Telecommunications Union (ITU), UNESCO, UNDP and UNCTAD.
  • The forum observed the participation of Secretary General ITU, Ministers of Russia, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Zimbabwe, Iran and leaders and high-level dignitaries.
  • At the forum Union Minister Sanjay Dhotre highlighted the role of Information and Communication Technologies(ICTs) in various sectors of growth.
  • He highlighted the policies and programs adopted by India to have a digital drive in the country.
  • He also mentioned various initiatives and platforms like Arogya Setu, CovidSavdhan system developed by India to deal with the pandemic.
  • He mentioned the BharatNet flagship programme of India which aims to have telecom infrastructure development in remote areas of the country.
