42nd FAO Conference

Current Context: The 42nd session of the Food and Agriculture’s Organisation (FAO) conference was held in a virtual manner.

• The conference was addressed by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar.
• The conference was held as the major governing body of UN’s FAO and it is being held once in 2 years.
• At the conference, FAO Members adopted the Strategic Framework 2022-2031.
• The Strategic Framework 2022-2031 was adopted to support Sustainable Development through the agri-food systems for Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life, with an aim that no one should be left behind.
• Indian side firstly congratulated FAO for completing 75 years of dedicational service on 16th Oct 2020 and also thanked FAO for contributing support for India’s proposal to declare 2023 as the International Year of Millets.
• Various initiatives taken by GOI like KISAN RAIL, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana were discussed at the conference.
