Current Context: India and Kuwait have signed an MoU agreement to enhance the cooperation to recruit Indian workers.

  • The MoU will enable Indian domestic workers who are working in the Gulf nation with legal protection under the law.
  • The legal framework will be in the lines of recruitment laws.
  • The MoU document was signed by Indian Ambassador Sibi George and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kuwait Majdi Ahmad Al-Dhafiri. The agreement was signed in the presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah.
  • India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is on his three days visit to Kuwait. The visit is in line with the time when 2021-22 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between India and Kuwait.
  • The MoU will secure the rights of domestic workers and the employer who are present in the Gulf nation.
  • The MoU will grant a 24-hour assistance mechanism for domestic workers.
  • Also, a joint committee will be set up to review the MoU activities on a periodic basis.
