Current Context: India is elected as a member of the UN Economic & Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2022-24.

  • The ECOSOC is one of the 6 main firms of the UN and it brings together people and issues to promote collective action for a sustainable world.
  • India is elected as 54th member for ECOSOC, in the Asia-Pacific states category along with Afghanistan, Oman and Kazakhstan.
  • The ECOSOC works to attain sustainable development through three major pillars namely, economic, social and environmental.
  • From African states, the members which were elected are: Côte d'Ivoire, Eswatini, Mauritius, Tunisia and the United Republic of Tanzania.
  • From the Eastern European states, the members which were elected are: Croatia and the Czech Republic.
  • From the Latin American and Caribbean States, the members which were elected are: Belize, Chile and Peru.
