MoC signed MoU with MoPSW

Current Context: The Ministry of Culture (MoC) signed MoU with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW).

• The MoU was signed for the purpose of developing cooperation in the Development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat.
• The NMHC is the country’s first of its kind complex facility which is meant for the legacy of the maritime heritage of India
• The NMHC will be developed at the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) site at Lothal, Gujarat.
• It will be an international tourist destination through which the maritime heritage of India from ancient to modern times will be showcased.
• It will be given an edutainment approach by the use of the latest technology in order to spread awareness about India’s maritime heritage.
• The area of around 400 acres will be accommodated by NMHC.
• The NMHC will be comprised of various unique structures like National Maritime Heritage Museum, Light House Museum, Heritage Theme Park, Museum Themed Hotels & Maritime themed eco-resorts, Maritime Institute.
• Thus it will recreate the ancient Lothal city, which is one of the prominent city of the Indus Valley Civilization dating to 2400BC.
• Both the ministries will support each other to develop NMHC during each phase of its construction, operation, sustenance, maintenance etc.
• The technical understanding of the design, lighting and digital technology for the NMHC will be provided by MoC.
• The NMHC fundraising will take place through National Culture Fund (NCF). Through NCF, MoC will grant Rs 15 crore to develop NMHC.
• MoC will also provide needed collaboration to NMHC for all maritime heritage subjects under its project 'Mausam'.
