Current Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the UN ‘High Level Dialogue on Desertification, Land degradation and Drought (DDLD)’.
PM Modi addressed UN High Level Dialogue on DDLD
  • PM Modi is the President of the 14th session of the Conference of Parties of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
  • The UN High-Level Dialogue on DDLD was attended by Executive Secretary of UNCCD, Ibrahim Thiaw along with the leaders from various organisations.
  • The objective of the event was to discuss the challenges associated with DDLD and to enhance SDG implementation, restore ecosystems and climate change adaptation etc.
  • PM Modi addressed the event by discussing India’s efforts to restore the degraded lands. He highlighted that in the last decade, around 3 million hectares of forest cover wad added in India, which resulted in an increase in the combined forest cover to one-fourth of India’s total area.
  • Also, India has kept a target to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030 and thus achieve a carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
  • Also, the Centre of Excellence will be developed in India to have a scientific way to address land degradation issues.
