'COVIHOME'-- India's First Rapid Electronic Covid-19 RNA Test Kit

Current Context: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has developed the country’s first Rapid electronic Covid-19 RNA Test kit named 'COVIHOME'.

• The 'COVIHOME' allows people to perform self-testing for COVID-19 at home itself.
• The operation and specifications of the kit are validated by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB).
• It will be used to check the trace of COVID-19 at the comfort of home with no harm, in 20 minutes of time span.
• The working principle of the kit is that it measures the electrical current before and after of immobilization of RNA on the sensor platform of the kit and then the result is calculated using an algorithm in the mobile app. Therefore, to perform the COVID-19 test, one must have the kit and mobile phone.
• The 'COVIHOME' kit combines the abilities of rapid antigen test's speed and RTPCR's accuracy.
• The kit had provided 94% of efficiency during the samples which were tested by ESI hospital.
• The approx. cost of the 'COVIHOME' kit will be between Rs 350 to Rs 450.
