Current Context: The United Nations Food System Pre-Summit 2021 was virtually addressed by Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar.

  • It was organised by the UN and Italy in Rome, Italy.
  • While addressing the event, Narendra Singh Tomar mentioned the vital role of agriculture to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030.
  • He mentioned that 12 out of 17 SDGs are directly dependent on agriculture.
  • He highlighted that agriculture is the major entity that is responsible for the socio-economic transformation of developing countries.
  • He also highlighted the journey of Indian agriculture in the areas like food shortages food grain exporters through various revolutions like Green, White and Blue.
  • He discussed the major focus of GOI on small and marginal farmers and how the Indian government is working to uplift farmers with income, farm output, adoption of healthy ways for farming in place of harmful chemicals, pre-harvest and post-harvest mechanism, tech in agriculture.
  • He also mentioned about Agriculture Infrastructure Fund with a corpus of Rs 1 lakh crore, the formation of 10000 Farmer Producer Organizations, PM KISAN Scheme, Per Drop More Crop scheme, Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana etc.
