Current Context: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) open debate through video conference.

  • India is the current Presidency holder of the UNSC for August 2021.
  • The theme for the UNSC debate was: ‘Enhancing Maritime Security – A Case for International Cooperation’.
  • The dignitaries discussed the measures to counter crime held in areas like maritime and assured to enhance partnership to strengthen maritime domain.
  • While addressing the debate, PM Modi mentioned the motto of ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for all in the Region). It aims to have coordinated measures for sustainable use of the oceans and offers a safe, secure, and stable framework for maritime security.
