World’s 2nd largest ‘National Gene Bank’

Current Context: The World’s second-largest refurbished state-of-the-art National Gene Bank was inaugurated by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar.

• It was inaugurated at the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), Pusa, New Delhi.
• The National Gene Bank will be responsible to preserve the seeds of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR).
• It has the capacity to preserve about one million germplasm in the form of seeds.
• It is capable to preserve the seeds for years in minus 20 degrees Celsius temperature.
• While inaugurating the National Gene Bank, the union minister mentioned that this is a major step to help the farmer community of India.
