8th Meeting of Agricultural Experts of BIMSTEC Countries

Current Context: India hosted 8th Meeting of Agriculture Experts of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Countries in a virtual manner.

• The meeting observed the participation of Agricultural Ministries from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, and Thailand.
• The meeting was chaired by Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education & Director General, ICAR.
• The participants discussed UN Food System Summit 2021 and the ongoing trends in agriculture and food systems at the global level.
• They assured to enhance cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors amongst the BIMSTEC Member States.
• They assured to cooperate to develop resilient agriculture, food systems & value chains.
• They also assured to focus on addressing biosafety and biosecurity concerns and to adopt digital technology in agriculture, and its trade activities.
• The member states of BIMSTEC appreciated India’s efforts to offer six slots of scholarships for Master and Ph.D. programs in agriculture and allied sectors. This will help to enhance capacity building in the mentioned sectors.
