‘iRASTE’ Project

Current Context: The Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari launched ‘Project iRASTE’. It was launched in Nagpur.

• The Project iRASTE signifies: intelligent Solutions for Road Safety through Technology and Engineering.
• The project is a collaborative initiative of Intel India, IIIT-H (International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad), CSIR-CRRI (Central Road Research Institute), Mahindra & Mahindra, and NMC (Nagpur Municipal Corporation).
• The project aims to enhance road safety and reduce road accidents in Nagpur.
• The project uses the features of AI (Artificial Intelligence), as AI will help to develop smarter and safer vehicles, roads, and drivers.
• It aims to frame a blueprint to Vision Zero for the country.
• The ‘Project iRASTE’ will focus on vehicle safety, mobility analysis, and road infrastructure safety.
• The Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) will be utilised in the project work. It will provide safety for fleets and road users. The alerts from ADAS will improve driver performance.
• There will be also mobility analysis which will continuously monitor dynamic risks of the entire road network to define grey and black spots i.e. the high risk or accident-prone areas.
• It will also consist of Collision Avoidance System (CAS).
• The technical guidance will be granted by CSIR-CRRI. The entity has performed a road safety audit for about 9000km.
• The ADAS technology, IIIT Hyderabad will look after population-scale road safety via Intel’s AI center for advanced AI research.
• The Mahindra & Mahindra will perform road safety, public awareness programs, and driver training.
