Current Context: The 7th Meeting of BRICS Communications Ministers was held through video conferencing.
7th Meeting of BRICS Communications Ministers
  • India was represented by Minister of State for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan.
  • The meeting was held under India’s current chair of BRICS.
  • At the meeting, Mr. Devusinh Chauhan highlighted that India is committed to bridge the digital divide in India.
  • To attain the objective the country is taking various Telecomm reforms in order to unleash the true potential of the telecom industry.
  • It aims to give major support to telecom service providers in India.
  • He mentioned that PM Narendra Modi has launched a flagship scheme to extend optical fibers to six lakh villages in India which will bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
  • The dignitaries at the meeting assured to work coordinately to develop multi-pronged approaches and reference models to have affordable access to communications services and digital technologies in BRICS nations. This will help them to attain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • They also decided to host the Digital BRICS Forum annually in order to share, adopt the expertise solutions to uplift the communication domain.
