Current Context: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight-tested ‘ABHYAS’.
DRDO successfully Flight-Tested ABHYAS
  • The ‘ABHYAS’ is the High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT).
  • It was test-fired from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Bay of Bengal in Odisha.
  • It is equipped with a MEMS-based Inertial Navigation System (INS) for navigation and Flight Control Computer (FCC) which will help in guidance and control activities.
  • The ‘ABHYAS’ was developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) which is the DRDO laboratory and based in Bengaluru.
  • It is developed for Indian Armed Forces and can be used as an aerial target to evaluate various missile systems.
  • It is programmed to function as a fully autonomous flight and the checkout activity can be done using a laptop-based Ground Control Station (GCS).
