Current Context: The New Space India Limited (NSIL) which is the new arm of ISRO has announced its first demand-driven communication satellite mission.

  • This mission will be part of space reforms that were announced by GOI in June 2020.
  • The mission is named GSAT 24, a four-tonne class Ku band satellite.
  • The satellite will be leased to Tata Sky. It will use this satellite for its DTH applications.
  • It will be launched during the first quarter of 2022.
  • The NSIL has the permission to build, launch, own and operate the satellite and provide services to its committed customer.
  • This GSAT 24 will be built by ISRO.
  • It will be launched using the Ariane-5 launcher which is operated by Arianespace.
  • The satellite will be owned and operated by NSIL on a commercial basis.
