Current Context: The 13th edition of the ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Summit was held recently.

  • The summit was hosted by Cambodia as it holds ASEM Chairmanship.
  • The theme of the summit: ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Shared Growth’.
  • India was represented by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu. He interacted with the delegates via video conference.
  • The countries from Asia and Europe participated in the summit to discuss regional and global issues in various sectors.
  • They also assured to strengthen cooperation in major areas.
  • ASEM consists of 51 member countries and two regional organizations namely the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
  • At the summit, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu highlighted the need to have reformations in the United Nations Security Council in order to make it capable to deal with the challenges.
  • He mentioned that the current multilateral system is lacking in providing an effective response to various challenges like economic, technological, and security.
