NASA’s DART Mission

Current Context: The NASA, US Space Agency has launched DART Mission, which is the first-of-its-kind mission.

• The DART signifies ‘Double Asteroid Redirection Test.
• The mission aims to change the path of an asteroid by intentionally crashing a spacecraft into it.
• It was launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
• It will be testing asteroid-deflecting technology through this mission.
• The mission aims to crash a space probe into the asteroid which will alter the speed and course of the asteroid so that it will be prevented from hitting the Earth.
• Therefore through this mission, NASA gets the chance to investigate such kind of method to deflect an asteroid by intentionally crashing a spacecraft into it in order to protect Earth from a potentially catastrophic collision in the future.
