Current Context: India has signed an MoU with the Maldives for the purpose of a pilot project on pre-arrival cargo data exchange.

  • This MoU will mark the beginning of the electronic exchange of customs data between both countries.
  • In this regard, Vivek Johri, CBIC Chairman, and Abdulla Shareef, Commissioner General of Maldives Customs, jointly launched the pilot on pre-arrival customs data exchange in a virtual manner.
  • The MoU will also facilitate trade between both countries as there will be an electronic exchange of data on a real-time basis.
  • This will enable fast-track customs payments, identify and eradicate frauds in the same and reduce the time for clearances.
  • There will be an enhancement in supply chains and boost bilateral trade between India and Maldives.
