Current Context: The NITI Aayog has signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) with United Nations World Food Program (UN-WFP).

  • The SoI was signed to offer a focus on mainstreaming millets and offer support to India to have an exchange of information in the same.
  • The SoI was signed with the consideration as 2023 will be celebrated as the International Year of Millet.
  • It will also help to enhance the livelihood of farmers.
  • It will generate an ability to adapt to climate change and transform food systems.
  • Various strategic and technological reforms to strengthen climate-resilient agriculture will be undertaken under the SoI.
  • Technical support to grow millets will be offered.
  • There will also be involvement of state governments, the Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), and other allied institutions to execute the objectives under the SoI in the country.
