India Semiconductor Mission

Current Context: The Union Information Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw launched India Semiconductor Mission.

• This mission aims to generate a large amount of investment to set up semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities in-country.
• In this regard, the companies which are interested are invited by the center to work on the development of semiconductors.
• The mission is an independent and specialized business division under Digital India Corporation.
• The financial support of upto 50% of the project cost will be provided for the scheme to set up display fabs. This will attract large investment to manufacture Thin Film Transistor LCD or Active Matrix Organic LED, which are the types of display panels.
• The support of around Rs 12,000 crores per fab has been mandated under the scheme to set up display fabs in India.
