India Successfully Test Fired BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile

Current Context: India successfully test-fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

• It was launched by the Indian Navy destroyer INS Vishakhapatnam off the Western coast.
• It hit the target in a precise manner.
• It has a speed of 2.8 Mach which is three times the sound speed.
• It is part of the BrahMos Aerospace, which is a joint venture of India and Russia.
• Its range was extended by DRDO from 298 km to around 450 km and it is thus termed as the world's fastest operational system in its class.
