EIU Democracy Index 2021

Current Context: The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Democracy Index 2021 was released. As per the index, India was ranked at 46th position with a score of 6.91.

• The ranking list was topped by Norway with the highest score of 9.75.
• The 2nd and 3rd positions are marked by New Zealand and Finland respectively
• The index ranking was framed for 165 independent countries and two territories.
• It was based on 5 findings namely electoral process and pluralism, functioning of the government, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties. The report has been further bifurcated into a full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime, and authoritarian.
