Current Context: The International Monsoons Project Office (IMPO) was launched by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Minister of State (IC) Earth Sciences; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh in a virtual manner.
International Monsoons Project Office (IMPO)
  • The IMPO is hosted at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune for the initial 5 years.
  • The IITM Pune is an institution under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • It will help to understand the importance of monsoons for the growth of the economy.
  • It will help to conduct research related to the international monsoon which will be identified under World Climate Research Programme and the World Weather Research Programme.
  • The IMPO will help to solve and understand the seasonal variability of monsoons, give accuracy to the predictions of monsoons and cyclones, enhance knowledge sharing, and boost capacity in areas of monsoon research.
  • The IMPO will support the Monsoons Panel, which is formed by the CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean Variability, Predictability, and Change) and GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Exchanges) programs of the World Climate Research Programme.
  • It will also support and work with World Weather Research Programme to perform tropical meteorology research.
