Current Context: Indigo Airlines becomes the first to use the indigenous satellite navigation system, called GAGAN.

  • GAGAN (GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation), is a satellite-based augmentation system. It is meant to provide navigation inputs to the airplanes flying in India. It is managed by the Airport Authority of India.
  • Indigo, has become the first airline to use GAGAN for its passenger Aircraft landing. This is a unique feat for India, as other players will follow the suit. It will further boost the demand for Indian satellite-based navigation in the neighborhood.
  • GAGAN uses GSAT -8 and GSAT -10 for signal in space communication. This would further the security apparatus of India as the signaling would be secured in Indian hands.
