Current Context: Israel has successfully tested its Aerial Defense System called Iron Beam.
Israel Tests New Laser-Based Aerial Defense System 'Iron Beam'
  • It is based on Laser (Light Active Detection and Ranging) technology. It is an improved version of the Iron Dome System. It is being seen as a complement to the Iron Dome because of its launch cost per interceptor, which is as low as $3.5.
  • It can be deployed across all three formats Land, Air, and Sea. It has a hit rate of 90%, i.e. it can intercept 90 out of 100 missiles and destroy them. It has been manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, in partnership with the Government of Israel.
  • Post-Lebanon war, where 44 of its civilians were killed in the Air Strikes in 2006. Israel planned to have an Air Defense System. Israel seeks to deploy it across its borders by the year 2024 for enhanced security.
  • A few months ago, Israel had tested the C-DOME SYSTEM, which is the naval version of the Iron Dome Project. However, with Iron Beam in place, there will be a complete overhaul of Aerial Defense.
  • India has procured S-400 from Russia for Air Defense, which works on similar mechanisms. Russia has also tested the S-500 recently, which has an enhanced range over the S-400.
