Current Context: Air India has sought a CCI nod to merge with Air Asia India.

  • Air India, bought by Tata Sons, has sought a CCI nod to merge with AirAsia India. Tata Sons owns an 83.67% share of AirAsia India. If the merger gets a yes, the combined domestic passenger share would reach upto 15.7%.
  • Tata Sons seeks this merger with an intent to compete with domestic flyers like Indigo. Domestic flying has gained momentum after the launch of Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) which has fixed an upper cap on the fare of domestic as well as international flights, to make it cheaper for the customers to fly.
  • Air India is currently headed by Natrajan Chandrasekhran, a former head of Tata Consultancy Services.
