Current Context: The World Trade Organization will hold a ministerial meeting in Geneva on 12-15th June.
WTO’s Highest Level Meeting Scheduled in Geneva
  • The World Trade Organization succeeded the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) and came into being on 1 January 2005. It supervises the parameters of global trade and aims to maintain a healthy world trade.
  • Its highest decision-making body would meet in the name of a ministerial conference in Geneva. The role of WTO gathered more prominence particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic as it negotiated for the availability of food materials across the globe.
  • The Indian government had recently asked for exporting her grain stocks to the deficient countries by providing concessions under Amber Box.
