  • Banking and Finance
    • OneCard, a mobile-first credit card firm, became the 104th unicorn in India after it raised $100 million in a Series D round of funding led by Temasek.
      • In 2022 so far, India has produced more than 20 fintech unicorns, which include OneCard, Open, Oxyzo, and Yubi (formerly CredAvenue).

    • Rajiv Gandhi Institute in Delhi has installed a "made in India surgical robotic system" devised by a new-age medical technology start-up that will make robotic surgery more accessible to patients.
    • India is celebrating the 75th year of Independence as Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. This is celebrated by the Ministry of Culture, and on this occasion, the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, organized “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav-22nd Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2022” from 16th July to 14th August 2022.

    • The holy city of Varanasi showcasing India’s culture and traditions over the ages will be declared the first “Cultural and Tourism Capital” of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
    • Ministry of electronics and information technology flags revenue departments move to impose customs duty on display parts of the phone.
      • The seeming difference in views between the two departments, government, and industry executives say, is relevant for duty evasion notices that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has served on Chinese smartphone companies Oppo and Vivo.
      • A notice has been issued by DRI to Oppo demanding Rs 4,389 crore custom duty citing wrongful misdeclaration of items imported.
    • A new census workstation has been unveiled by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in the Economics Lab of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
    • The Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) has launched “Jagriti”, a mascot for empowering consumers and generating awareness of their rights.

    • This day is celebrated in remembrance of the first democratically elected president of South Africa and his struggles for justice against apartheid. Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1993.

  • Defence
    • Chief of army staff Gen Manoj Pande left for Bangladesh on a three-day visit to enhance bilateral defence and security cooperation.
      • This is his first visit after taking charge as the army chief. Gen Manoj Pande will hold one-on-one meetings with the three service chiefs of Bangladesh and will also meet senior leaders of the country.
      • He is also scheduled to meet the members of the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support and Training Operations(BIPSOT).
    • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has launched the fourth P17A stealth frigate ‘Dunagiri’ into the Hooghly River in Kolkata. The Project 17A frigate is built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders Limited.
  • Reports
    • SBI research report: Average farm income has grown in the range of 1.3 to 1.7 times in FY22 from FY18 and exports increased to over USD 50 billion.
      • Farmers' income is more than double for certain crops in some states, like soybean in Maharashtra and Cotton in Karnataka in FY22 from FY18. While in other cases it rose in the range of 1.3-1.7 times.
      • The increase in income of farmers engaged in cash crops has been more predominant compared to that of farmers growing non-cash crops.
      • The report said this also led to the increase in the share of agriculture in the GDP to 18.8 percent from 14.2 percent. This rise was also due to the shrinkage of industrial and service contributions to the economy due to the second wave of the pandemic.

  • Obituaries:
    • Former Punjab Speaker and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, Nirmal Singh Kahlon passed away at the age of 79. He was the Rural Development and Panchayat Minister from 1997 to 2002 and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2012.
  • Sports:
    • GM Aravindh Chithambaram won the 41st Villa de Benasque International Open chess tournament in Benasque, Spain.
    • The Paracin Open ‘A’ chess competition 2022 in Serbia was won by young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa, who finished with 8 points after nine rounds.
