    • Malayalam filmmaker KP Kumaran honoured Kerala's highest film award JC Daniel Award 2022. He made his debut with Athithi in 1975. His film 'Rugmini' won the National award for a best feature film in Malayalam and Kerala state film award in 1989.
    • He is known for films like Thenthulli, Laxmivijayam, and Thottam. His last directorial was Gramavrikshathile Kuyil (2020).
  • Appointments
    • Vinayak Pai has been named as the managing director of TATA Projects, the company announced. Vinayak Deshpande, who had been in charge of operations for more than 11 years, had been replaced by Pai.
    • The International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), a global ports forum for industry collaboration, has named Ennarasu Karunesan as its India representative.
    • Jaikumar Srinivasan was appointed as Director of Finance at NTPC.
      • Prior to the appointment as director of finance in NTPC, he served as director of finance in NLC India (A fossil fuel mining and thermal power generating company).
    • Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess resigns. He will be succeeded by Oliver Blume.
      • Herbert Diess's departure comes as the company is trying to beat Tesla to become the world's top electric car maker.
    • Akshaya Moondra to be the next CEO of Vodafone Idea. He will replace Ravinder Takkar who will depart next month. Akshaya Moondra will take charge with effect from August 19 for a period of three years.
      • Akshaya Moondra is currently the Chief financial officer of Vodafone Idea. He will be the third CEO of Vodafone Idea after the merger of Vodafone India and Idea in cellular in August 2018.
    • Dinesh Gunawardena was sworn in as the 15th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. He belongs to Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna(SLPP) party.

    • Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in the country to connect all registered commercial vehicles equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD).
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled Varuna, India’s first passenger drone.
    • NITI Aayog launches two initiatives to boost electric mobility.
      • E-AMRIT (Accelerated e-mobility Revolution for India's Transportation) and a mobile application to raise awareness about electric mobility and a report on Advanced Chemistry cell battery usage and recycling markets in India during the visit of COP 26 president Alok Sharma.
      • The e-AMRIT app offers information like engagement tools that enable the user to assess the benefits of electric vehicles, determine savings, and all information related to developments in the Indian electric vehicle market.
  • Banking and Finance
    • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 96.3 million (about Rs 770 crore) loan to fund safe drinking water and sanitation project in Himachal Pradesh.
      • The loan has been provided under the Himachal Pradesh Rural Drinking Water Improvement and Livelihood Project.
    • NITI Aayog has released a report titled- 'Digital Banks: A Proposal for Licensing & Regulatory Regime for India'. It suggested setting up Digital Banks and a licensing and regulatory framework for such Banks.
  • Important Days:
    • National Broadcasting Day is observed on July 23 in India. The day aims to remind Indian citizens about the impact of radio on our lives.
  • Obituary:
    • Noted scientist and director of the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Dr. Ajay Kumar Parida has passed away at the age of 58. He was awarded the Padma Shri Award by the President of India in 2014 for his outstanding contribution to the field of Science and Engineering.
  • International News:
    • According to a World Health Organisation report, India was the top remittance recipient among low- and middle-income countries with $87 billion as per 2021 estimates way ahead of China and Mexico's 53 billion dollars, the Philippines (36 billion dollars), and Egypt (33 billion dollars).

  • RBI imposed restrictions on four Co-operative banks
