  • Defence
    • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a contract worth USD 100 million with Honeywell Defence and Space for the manufacturing and supply of 88 TPE331-12B engines. It will also provide maintenance and support services to power the Hindustan Trainer Aircraft (HTT-40), which was developed by HAL for basic training requirements of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
      • Honeywell defence and Space will support the export of HTT-40 aircraft in the coming years. The HTT-40 aircraft are powered by TPE331-12B engines.
    • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has earned $279 million in foreign exchange by launching satellites for global clients. ISRO has successfully launched 345 satellites from 34 countries on Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle(PSLV). The latest launch was of three Singaporean into orbit.
  • Appointments
    • Switzerland-based bank Credit Suisse appoints Ulrich Koerner, currently head of asset management as the new Chief executive Officer (CEO).
      • Ulrich Koerner will replace Thomas Gottstein, who was appointed as CEO in 2020.

    • Double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will be the flagbearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham on July 28.
      • Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra was expected to be the flagbearer but was pulled out due to an injury.
    • India wins the third ODI against West Indies by 119 runs, thus winning the series 3-0. India scored 225-3 before the innings ended amid showers after 36 overs at Queens Park Oval, Shubman Gill scored 98 runs and Shikhar Dhawan scored 58.
  • National News
    • Prime Minister Modi to inaugurate the regional center of New Development Bank (NDB) and witness the commencement of operations of units of Deutsche bank, JP Morgan Chase, and MUFG bank at Gujarat International Finance Tech city (GIFT city) on July 29.
      • NDB is a development bank set up by BRICS nations.
  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the ‘Smart e-Beat’ system in Gurugram. Starting on the lines in Karnataka, the CM flagged off 119 motorcycles of the Gurugram police connected with this system.
    • This is an app-based system. The attendance of motorcycle rider policemen will be marked through this system. It will enable easy monitoring of these riders.
  • The Union Cabinet cleared a Rs 1.64-lakh crore package for the revival of state-owned telecom service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), with the focus on fresh capital for upgrading the loss-making company’s network and allocating spectrum for it to offer 4G services, de-stressing its balance sheet and augmenting its fiber network.
  • Roshni Nadar Malhotra, the chairperson of HCL Technologies, has retained the tag of the richest woman in India for the second year in a row. As of 31st December 2021, Roshni Nadar’s total wealth stood at Rs 84,330 crore, according to the third edition of ‘Kotak Private Banking Hurun – Leading Wealthy Women List’.
    • Roshni Nadar was followed by Nykaa-owner Falguni Nayar, overtaking Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon, with a total wealth of Rs 57,520 crore. Falguni Nayar is the world’s tenth richest self-made woman.

    • HDFC Asset Management, investment manager to HDFC Mutual Fund (HDFC MF) has announced the launch of its two funds – HDFC NIFTY Next 50 ETF and HDFC NIFTY 100 ETF, in order to expand their suite of  “HDFC MF Index Solutions”, which HDFC Mutual Fund has been managing for the past 20 years.
    • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is learned to have accepted the Centre’s request for allowing non-financial institutions and non-regulated entities to own more than 40 percent of IDBI Bank, as the Union government and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) look to sell 51-74 percent stake in the lender through the strategic divestment process.
