Defence

  • The Indian Navy received two MH-60 R multirole helicopters from the United States at Cochin International Airport. The third helicopter is scheduled to be delivered in August this year, while the delivery of all 24 MH 60R helicopters will be completed by 2025.

  • India-UAE-France holds maiden trilateral meet to explore potential cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region including maritime security, blue economy, regional connectivity, food, and energy security.

  • The union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Modi approved the signing of Guarantees for the hosting of the U-17 Women's World Cup India 2022. The tournament is scheduled to be held across three cities Bhubaneswar, Goa, and Mumbai from October 11 to 30.

  • Union cabinet cleared a Rs 1.64 lakh crore package for revival of telecom service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) with a focus on fresh capital for upgrading the loss-making company's network, allocating spectrum to offer 4G services, de-stressing its balance sheet and augment its fiber network.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair governing council meeting of NITI Aayog(National Institution for Transforming India) on August 7, which will discuss issues related to agriculture, health, and the economy.

  • July 29 - International Tiger Day: Every year July 29 is celebrated as International Tiger day to raise awareness about the conservation of tigers. This day was first celebrated in 2010 after it was found that 97% of wild tigers had disappeared in the last century with only 3000 of them remaining.

State news

  • Telangana state government will provide free water supply upto 20,000 litres to all domestic consumers. The government said Domestic-Slum, Domestic-Individual, Domestic-Multi storeyed buildings(MSB)/Bulk connections are eligible for free water supply.
  • The Tamil Nadu government issued a formal order to roll out the free breakfast scheme for students studying in classes one to five in selected government schools in the state. The government has budgeted Rs 33 crore for the scheme, which will be implemented in 1,500 schools in the first phase, and will start in mid-September.

Acquisition

  • Arcelor Mittal SA agreed to buy Brazilian steelmaker CSP from shareholders including Vale SA for $2.2 billion. The CSP plant was built by Vale.

  • Popular UK-based Punjabi singer Balwinder Safri died at the age of 63, weeks after recovering from coma, his family confirmed.
  • Padma Shri Sushovan Banerjee, known as ‘One Rupee Doctor,’ passed away. The 80-year-old was suffering from kidney ailments and was admitted to a hospital in Durgapur.
