Commercial Availability of Lumpy Disease Vaccine

Current Context: The Director of the National Research Centre on Equines (NRCE), Dr. Yash Pal, confirmed the ongoing efforts to make the vaccine against Lumpy Skin Disease commercial.

• Lumpi-ProVac is an indigenous vaccine against Lumpy Skin Disease.
• It has been manufactured by the NRCE with the Indian Veterinary Research Institute as a partner.
• Lumpy Skin Disease is caused by the Capripoxvirus.
• The virus is transmitted to cattle via vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies.
• A few symptoms include loss of weight, low milk yield, fever, lumps on the body, etc.
• Since it affects all types of cattle and water buffalo, it is called Epizootic disease.
• There is no transfer of virus from animals to humans, hence the disease is not Zoonotic.
