Current Context: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, released 8 wild Cheetahs at Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park.
Cheetahs Introduced in Kuno National Park
  • In the first tranche, 8 Cheetahs were brought from Namibia and were introduced in India under Project Cheetah.
  • Project Cheetah is the world's first inter-continental large wild carnivore translocation project.
  • Eight Cheetahs, five of which are female, were flown from Windhoek, Namibia to Gwalior, followed by a helicopter ride into Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno Palpur.
  • In order to locate their movements, the cheetahs will be radio-collared.
  • IUCN Status of the cheetah is Vulnerable and it comes under CITES Schedule.
  • The cheetahs were brought in wooden crates and were released at two different spots in the National Park.
  • Kuno National Park was founded in 1981 as a Wild Sanctuary and was given the status of a national park in 2018.
