Current Context: The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), along with Reef-World Foundation, launched the Green Fins Hub.

  • To provide sustainable marine tourism with a major boost, the UNEP in collaboration with the UK-based charity, the Reef-World Foundation, launched the Green Fins Hub.
  • The Green Fins Hub is the first-ever global marine tourism industry platform that will help operators to make simple and cost-efficient changes to their routine practices by utilizing apt solutions.
  • It is an industry-backed global digital platform for diving and snorkeling operators around the world.
  • It has features like:
    1. Green Fins Community Forum- For discussing environmental issues and ideas to tackle them.
    2. Green Fins Solutions Library- For providing a platform for more than 100 proven environmental solutions to common daily challenges.
    3. Action Plan Tracker- For providing the users with tracking their progress, with respect to the sustainability targets, over time.
  • From around 700 operators across 14 nations today, the Green Fins Hub is expected to scale up reach to a potential 30,000 operators across the globe.
  • UNEP is an intergovernmental organization responsible for raising awareness and tackling environmental issues and was established in 1972 with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Its current Executive Director is Inger Andersen.
