Current Context: Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Secretary-General of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf.

  • The MoU was signed on the mechanism of consultations between India and the GCC.
  • India's economic ties with the GCC have gradually increased as a result of oil imports.
  • During 2020-21, India’s imports from GCC were USD59.3 billion and its exports to GCC were USD28.06 billion.
  • GCC is an intergovernmental economic and political alliance between the six Arab nations, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
  • It was established in 1981 to promote economic, security, cultural, and social cooperation between the six Arab States. Its Secretariat is in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
