Current Context: The sixth edition of Japan India Maritime Exercise 2022 (JIMEX 22 commenced in the Bay of Bengal.

  • It was hosted by the Indian Navy comprising exercises at sea and harbor at Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The sixth edition marked the tenth anniversary of the joint exercise which began in 2012.
  • Rear Admiral Hirata Toshiyuki, Commander Escort Flotilla Four, led the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships. While Indian naval ships were led by Rear Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.
  • Multi-purpose stealth frigate, Sahyadri along with Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes Kadmatt, and Kavaratti represented India. Along with them, Fleet Tanker Jyoti, Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Guided Missile Destroyer Ranvijay, MIG 29K fighter aircraft, Offshore Patrol Vessel Sukanya, submarines, and ship-borne helicopters also participated in the exercise.
  • JIMEX is a joint exercise conducted biennially by the Indian Navy and the JMSDF since 2012. It is aimed at increasing interoperability between the two nations and countering China's influence in the Indian Ocean.
