Coal India signs MoU with BHEL, IOCL, and GAIL

Current Context: Coal India Limited signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC), and GAIL (India) Ltd for setting up coal gasification projects.

• Union Minister of Coal, Mines, and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Prahlad Joshi stated that the country is likely to become Aatmanirbhar in Thermal Coal Production in the near future.
• The Coal Ministry has aimed to achieve 100 million tons of coal gasification by 2030.
• An estimated cost of Rs. 35,000 crores is proposed for surface coal gasification.
• This is planned to be set up in West Bengal, Orissa, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
• According to the reports, 24 million tons of coal by March of next year.
