Current Context: Heaviest rocket of ISRO, Launch Vehicle Mark 3 (LVM3), successfully launched OneWeb’s 36 satellites from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
Heaviest Rocket of ISRO
  • The launch of OneWeb’s 36 satellites by ISRO’s LVM3 marked its entry into international commercial launch services.
  • NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) has been given the responsibility to carry out the LVM3-M2 dedicated commercial satellite mission.
  • The 43.5-meter and 644-ton LVM3 carried 36 satellites which weighed around 5.7 tons.
  • This was the 14th launch of OneWeb and now it has a total of 462 satellites orbiting in space.
  • NSIL is a Government of India-owned commercial wing of ISRO that was established in 2019 with its headquarters in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The current Chairperson of NSIL is D Radhakrishnan.
  • OneWeb is a joint collaboration between the Government of the UK and Bharti Enterprises of India with the objective to improve the world’s connectivity and access to information. It was established in 2012 with its headquarters in London. The current CEO of the company is Neil Masterson.
