Current Context: India abstained on a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution, to condemn Russia’s “illegal referenda” and to declare its annexation of four Ukrainian territories invalid.

  • India abstained from voting after underlining that it was important for the concerned parties to return to the negotiating table and that escalation of tension was in no one’s interest.
  • The resolution was tabled by the USA and Albania but was vetoed by Russia and couldn’t be adopted.
  • Out of 15-member UNSC, 10 countries supported the resolution.
  • Along with India, China, Brazil, and Gabon also abstained from the UNSC Resolution.
  • India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, iterated that India was disturbed by the recent developments in Ukraine and that no solution can be achieved at the cost of human lives.
