Current Context: The Naval Innovation Indigenization Organization (NIIO) under the Indian Navy and the Drone Federation of India (DFI) partnered to promote indigenous development, manufacturing, and testing of drones and counter-drones.

  • The Technology Development and Acceleration Cell (TDAC) of the NIIO and the Drone Federation of India (DFI) will collaborate in the research and development (R&D) and manufacturing of indigenous drones for the Indian Navy.
  • The primary objective of this collaboration is to increase the Navy-Industry-Academia Synergy and achieve the goal of making the nation “Atmanirbhar”.
  • The partnership between TDAC and DFI will set a strong roadmap for the induction of drone and counter-drone platforms in the Indian Navy.
  • DFI is a non-government, not-for-profit body that was established in the year 2017 with the objective to build a sustainable UAV Industry in India. The current Director of the DFI is Smit Shah.
  • NIIO was launched in 2020 by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh with the objective to foster indigenization and innovation for self-reliance (Atmanirbharta) in defence.
