Current Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the “Mission Schools of Excellence” in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

  • The primary objective of the “Mission Schools of Excellence” initiative is to reform the curriculum of schools in Gujarat along with improving their infrastructures.
  • At the inaugural event, PM Modi urged all states of India to set up state-of-the-art centers to help boost the quality of education in schools.
  • The overall budget of the scheme is estimated at around Rs. 10,000 crores and the World Bank will partly fund the scheme.
  • In Phase I of the program, school infrastructure upgrades worth Rs. 5,567 crores would be carried out.
  • The scheme will involve setting up 1.5 lakh smart classrooms, 20,000 computer labs, 50,000 classrooms, and 5,000 Atal Tinkering Labs.
