Current Context: OneWeb entered into a partnership with New Space India Limited (NSIL) regarding the launch of its 36 Gen 1 low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

  • The agreement is regarding the 14th launch under the OneWeb Satellite Constellation program in which multiple Gen 1 low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites will be launched.
  • The launch of 36 Gen 1 LEO satellites will be done through ISRO’s GSLV-Mk III, which is the heaviest rocket of ISRO.
  • The launch of satellites will take place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • OneWeb is a communications company that was established in 2012 with its headquarters in London, UK. The current CEO of the company is Neil Masterson.
  • NSIL is a government-owned commercial arm of ISRO that was founded in 2019 with its headquarters in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The current Chairperson of the company is Radhakrishnan Durairaj.
