Punjab and Haryana CM discusses SYL issue

Current Context: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar discuss the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal issue.

• The stand of Punjab is that the water will remain with them and not allow any water to flow to Haryana.
• The issue is pertaining to the construction of the canal.
• It was discussed that if the center forces to construct of the canal then it can be an invitation to the earlier days of terrorism to the state.
• The issue of SYL dates back to 1966.
• In 1982, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi launched the construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal with a ceremony in Kapoori village.
• Static part- When Haryana was formed, a need arose to share the river waters and Punjab was opposing the same.
