  • Hitachi Payment Services has been given preliminary approval by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to serve as a payment aggregator (PA).
  • In order to deploy AI and ML for supervisory tasks, RBI has narrowed the field to seven international consulting firms. These are the seven firms: (1) Accenture Solutions Private Limited (2) Boston Consulting Group (India) Pvt Ltd (3) Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP (4) Ernst and Young LLP (5) McKinsey & Company (6) KPMG Assurance and Consulting Services LLP (7) Pricewaterhouse Coopers Pvt Ltd.
  • At a meeting of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in New Delhi, Delhi, the Defence Purchase Council (DAC) approved the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for three capital acquisition bids totaling Rs 4,276 crore—two for the Indian Army (IA) and one for the Indian Navy (IN).

  • Off the coast of Odisha, India's Prithvi-II tactical ballistic missile was successfully test-launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur. The first missile created by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program is the short-range, surface-to-surface Prithvi-II (IGMDP).
  • According to new statistics from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi is the most polluted city in India in 2022.
  • The governments of India and the UK marked Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on January 9, 2023, by launching the “Young Professionals Scheme”. The scheme allows up to 3,000 degree-holding citizens aged between 18 and 30 to live and work in each other’s countries for a period of two years.
  • Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has carved the world's biggest hockey stick in Odisha's Cuttack. The sculpture was made on the banks of the Mahanadi River in Cuttack.
  • To encourage the export of Indian spices, the World Spice Congress (WSC), in its 14th edition, will take place in Mumbai from February 16–18, 2023.
  • Vision 2030: S-P-I-C-E-S (Sustainability, Productivity, Innovation, Collaboration, Excellence, and Safety) is the theme of the WSC 2023.
  • Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar opened the 83rd All India Presiding Officers Conference in Jaipur on 11 January 2023.

  • International News:
    • NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission has found a second Earth-sized, rocky planet in the habitable zone that goes by the name of TOI 700 e.
    • In order to reach over 80% deployment of its intended in-orbit low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, OneWeb, a British satellite broadband connectivity company backed by the Bharti group, launched an additional 40 satellites from SpaceX's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, the United States.
  • Sports News:
    • Prior to the FIH Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela, Hockey India introduced the "Hockeyverse" on its social media platforms on January 9, 2023. Hockey India was the first National Sports Federation to enter the metaverse with this debut. It will provide a virtual experience of Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium.

    • A.C. Charania, an Indian-American expert in the aerospace sector, has been chosen to serve as the new chief technologist for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). At NASA's headquarters, he will be Administrator Bill Nelson's top technical policy and program advisor.
    • As of January 12, 2023, acting Chief Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh will lead the Gauhati High Court (HC), Assam, following the retirement of outgoing Chief Justice Rashmin Manharbhai Chhaya on January 11, 2023.
    • Anurag Kumar was appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) on 9th January 2023.

    • At the age of 82, Constantine II, the country's last monarch before it became a republic in 1974, passed away in Athens, Greece, on January 10, 2023.

    • The British royal family member Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, has published his autobiography, "Spare." Author J. R. Moehringer of the United States provided writing assistance for the book. Transworld Publishers Ltd., a branch of Penguin Random House, is the book’s publisher.
